Dementia is a word used to describe when someone’s brain doesn’t work the way it used to. It means they might have trouble remembering things, or finding the right words, or doing things they once did easily. Their feelings and mood might change too, and sometimes it takes them longer to understand what’s happening. The brain is like the control centre for our thoughts, memories, and feelings — when it’s feeling unwell or changes in a certain way, that’s when we say a person has dementia.

Dementia isn’t just one thing — there are many kinds of it, and it can happen to different people for different reasons. But one thing is the same: it means the person might need help doing things we often take for granted, like getting dressed, cooking a favourite meal, or remembering a person’s name.
