Peter's Shearing Day
Peter is an eleven-year-old boy who lives on a peaceful Hutterite colony in southern Alberta. Every spring, the whole colony gathers for Shearing Day, a special time when all the sheep are sheared for their warm wool. This year, Peter is finally old enough to join the men and boys in the shearing shed—and he can’t wait.
With guidance from his dad, older brother Joseph, his uncles, and his grandpa, Peter learns how to handle the sheep, how to use the old-style hand shears, and how to respect the animals he works with. But shearing isn’t easy! Some sheep won’t stay still, some have wool full of burrs, and Peter’s arms get tired fast. He even makes a mistake that teaches him an important lesson about patience and care.
By the end of the long day, Peter has sheared several sheep—including one all by himself. His family is proud, and Grandpa gives him a special gift that shows Peter has truly earned his place as a real shearer.
Peter’s First Shearing Day is a heartwarming story about family, hard work, tradition, and growing up. Young readers will enjoy following Peter’s journey as he learns new skills, works through challenges, and discovers the pride that comes from helping his community.
